Langford college students are following the rainbow street to high school with the set up of a brand new crosswalk meant to honour 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and improve security, consciousness and inclusivity.
The City of Langford says the Progress Satisfaction Flag crosswalk, put in on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Spencer Center College was an initiative introduced ahead by the college’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities (SOGI) Membership.
The college is positioned at 1026 Goldstream Ave.
The membership had written a letter to Langford’s mayor and council in hopes a crosswalk collaboration would come to fruition.
“Including a Progress Satisfaction Flag crosswalk to our group will talk the significance of variety and hopefully unite the underrepresented 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, adults, seniors, and households in Langford,” the membership wrote.
‘It takes braveness’
Jen Nixon, the college’s principal, is thrilled.
She says the scholars have “exemplified their dedication to being engaged residents,” whereas instructor Kelly McCarthy, pupil engagement facilitator Su Fortress and schooling assistant Rachelle Wadham supplied them steering.
“I’m so proud and impressed with the scholars within the SOGI Membership. It takes braveness to face up for human rights, and it takes grit to persevere on the journey of making an inclusive, numerous, and respectful group,” stated Nixon.
On Tuesday, Sooke College District (SD62) posted a photo on Facebook of crews portray the crosswalk, including, “Our gratitude to the Metropolis of Langford for making the neighbourhood round Spencer Center College extra welcoming to all.”

College students from the SOGI membership had requested that the crosswalk be painted with the colors of the Progress Satisfaction Flag, which mixes each the Rainbow Satisfaction and Transgender flags. It additionally consists of colors to signify Black, Indigenous and other people of color (BIPOC), in keeping with the town in its publish.
The brand new crosswalk refreshes the present one outdoors the college.
